A friend from work recently shared a link for Baked by Melissa. She makes tiny mini cupcakes. I have a mini cupcake pan but I do not think the cupcakes are as little as these...

These cupcakes are so cute and the perfect size (you can try every flavor and not feel too guilty!) If you live in NYC go try them...if you don't live in the big apple - they ship nationwide! The flavors are so what limited - but it's an adorable idea.

I also discovered Hammond's Candies. I remember having a lemons with candy straws in elementary school...

Hammond's sells candy cocktail straws. Think of all the fun drinks you could sip through these delicious beverage accessories...

terrarium

I finally made my terrarium! My lovely boyfriend was kind enough to pick me up some potting soil on his travels yesterday. I thought when I ordered the starter kit from Terrain, it would include everything I would need. Silly me, it didn't include soil!

Since I posted about purchasing terrarium materials (about two weeks ago) two of my succulent plants died. I was upset about this but then realized I wouldn't have had space for them anyway. I am currently on the hunt to find a pretty bird or little gnome (my sister suggested tiny monkeys) for decoration.

I am very pleased with how my first terrarium turned out. I already have my next container and will pick up some little plants this weekend!

terrarium obsessed

I went to the Philadelphia Flower Show this weekend specifically to visit one booth, Terrain.

I have recently become terrarium obsessed. As a birthday present to myself I bought a big glass container, 5 small plants, and then ordered the starter kit from the Terrain website, as they were out of charcoal soil and stones at the booth.

My starter kit arrived last night. Tonight I make my very first terrarium.

Design Observer is my current homepage. I read Adam Harrison Levy's essay Deaths Bloom this morning and found myself unable to look away from the accompanying photography.

"From 1913 to 1971 five thousand one hundred and twenty one mentally ill patients were cremated on the grounds of the Oregon State Hospital. Their remains were sealed in copper canisters. The canisters were stored in the hospital’s basement until the 1970s when they were moved to a memorial vault underground. The vault was subjected to periodic floods. In 2000 they were removed from their institutional crypt, placed on plain pine shelves in a storeroom, and were left virtually forgotten until David Masiel heard of their existence and photographed them..."

Please go read the article. Look at the images. The exhibition catalog, Library of Dust, is officially on my wish list. These images are ephemeral and beautiful.

New Work: The Most Vintage Brew Line

My boyfriend Matt is looking for a copywriting position. This weekend I helped him create "The Most Vintage Brew Line" which is an anagram of Matthew Livingstone Beer.

I need to take some better pictures but the project turned out really well. Matt wrote all the copy and I did design. Each bottle has his resume as the nutritional information. Printed on brown craft paper, the labels definitely have a vintage feeling. We also included coaster business cards with his contact information.

A side note - the Hot & Honey website is going to launch shortly, along with the Hot & Honey Blog and our etsy shop. Lots of exciting stuff in the works.

The pattern and color choices on their greeting cards and gift wrap is most definitely, "just right". Bright, bold and clean are how I would describe the design available in the Lagom store. The products represent their concept to a tee.

Peonies are my favorite flowers. It is sad that they bloom and die so quickly. Being that I am a little cranky this afternoon, collecting these images via flickr made me feel a little better. They are lush, plush and just fabulous.

Major rain storms are headed for the northeast, bleh. Like we haven't had enough rain recently. Goodbye spring, hello summer.

Granola Bar Update

For the most part the granola bars were successful. I used dried cherries instead of cranberries. The cherries are a bit sweeter than cranberries, but still slightly tart. I am fairly satisfied with the flavor and overall appearance (still waiting on feedback from friends & coworkers).

I would like to figure out how to make them slightly more chewy. They are very crunchy and a little hard to bite through. Next time I might try more honey & peanut butter. Thoughts?

Well, I hope they will be delicious. I am attempting granola bars from scratch tonight. I went to Whole Foods during lunch to collect the ingredients that I do not normally keep in my kitchen, like flaxseed.

Delicate Elegance

Masami Banman is a very talented jewelry designer. I met Masami during freshman foundation at RISD. Her work is absolutely stunning.

During our 3D class freshman year, we were given the assignment of creating bug sculptures out of wire, her finished piece (which I believe was a butterfly?) was lovely and her craft meticulous. At that moment I think the majority of our class probably realized which major she would choose - jewelry & metal smithing. Masami is talented across all mediums from drawing to sculpture, however, she really found her niche in jewelry. She is precise and has an eye for detail.

Sarah Walsh is a graphic designer & illustrator based in Yorkshire. I just love her indentity design for Mallard Tearooms. It's vibrant and fun, but the more classic pattern choices hail back to the tradition of afternoon tea. The combination of the simple type and logomark work well with the patterns, neither element overpowers the design.

I really enjoy CBS Sunday morning. Last week there was a piece on ETSY.

Yesterday, there was a fantastic segment on podiatrist turned photographer Jonathan Singer.

His photography is so wonderful, the flowers look like they were painted by the Dutch Masters. The Smithsonian was so impressed with his work that his book Bontanica Magnifica is now a perminant part of their rare books collection.

The perfect lighting and color really make his work spectacular. I love photography of flowers and plant life. Check out his portfolio here. To watch the piece from CBS Sunday Morning click here.

Found this article in the New York Times about Bompas & Parr, creators of "fine english jellies."

"We know from history that jellies were once considered to be the pinnacle of sophistication," Mr. Parr said. "They were used as very lavish centerpieces, the way marzipan and sugar were used, but then jelly became corrupted by children's parties."

Bottom line, the jello (I mean jello and jellies...same thing? right?) is pretty freaking fantastic looking. The color gradations...the glowing jello mold?! Fabulous!

I wonder if it tastes good?
